A few years ago, vocalist/guitarist Deborah Winters booked a few performances
that featured guitarist Cedricke Dennis and percussionist Ian Dogole. Magic happened. The group
brought the funk. Dennis & Dogole forged a rhythmically charged backdrop to
WintersÕ original compositions and to the groupÕs interpretations of jazz
standards and rock/pop classics. Mongo SantamariaÕs ÒAfro BlueÓ was rearranged
for African talking drum and funkified guitar with Winters soaring over the top
of the fray. Jimi HendrixÕs ÒUp from the SkyÓ featured Mitch Mitchell-inspired
Afro-Peruvian cajon with brushes in tandem with restrained yet ecstatic guitar
forays that likely would have delighted the master and vocals that leapt into
the stratosphere.
On Saturday evening, March 14, this trio will reemerge
for the first time in years as a collaborative venture that showcases all three
distinctive ÒvoicesÓ in a setting that is always conducive to magic – the
Munay Farms sanctuary in north Petaluma. Dogole, Winters and Dennis will
perform their original pieces and once again summon the spirits of Hendrix,
Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell and other luminaries in an
impassioned and energized program that will lift you out of your seats and
leave you breathless.
